This is another day trip I really appreciate. The scenery is very grand. I have never seen anything close to this. It's beyond unique. Montserrat is 30 miles away from Barcelona. The monastery is on the top of the mountain.
On the train to Montserrat |
To visit Montserrat, you need to take the metro to Plaça Espanya first. Then go upstairs to exit the metro station. Now you are in Plaça Espanya. The information booth is in plan view. Tell the nice staff at the information booth you would like to go to Montserrat. He will sell you the Montserrat package ticket (27,50 euros) that includes all the transportation you need and return tickets. The staff will also ask you to choose between taking Funicular (cable car) or Cremallera (railway train) to get from the bottom of the mountain to the top. They say Funicular has better views. But when it gets crowded and you are sandwiched in the middle, you don't see anything.
Ask the staff at information booth to show you where the entrance for R5 track is because it can be quite confusing to find it for the first time. Go down the entrance to take the regional train R5. It takes almost one hour to arrive at the bottom of the mountain.

The view from the monastery |
We took Cremallera to access the top of the mountain after we got off R5 because the package ticket which included Funicular was sold out that day. I didn't mind taking the mountain train really. It took 23 minutes to reach the monastery.
Just a reminder. If you choose to take Funicular, get off R5 train at Montserrat Aeri to take the cable car. For Cremallera, get off R5 at Monistrol de Montserrat (one stop after Montserrat Aeri) to take the mountain train.
Your package ticket also includes two additional funicular rides that take you from the monastery to two different view points of the mountain.
Check the timetables that come with your ticket so you won't miss any train.
