Florence, Day 2: Piazza Santissima Annunziata & Ospedale deli Innocenti

In Italy, most hotels offer complimentary breakfast, which is very conveniently and really saves you time. After breakfast, we went to Ospedale degli Innocenti for a quick photo tour.

Ospedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents) was the world’s first orphanage opened in 1445. It sounds depressing if you ask me. The building, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, is an example of the early Renaissance architecture. On each tondo, there is a baby wrapped in clothes. If the name Brunelleschi sounds familiar, he also designed the dome of Florence Cathedral, which inspired many.

Piazza Santissima Annunziata is adjacent to Ospedale degli Innocenti. There was some kind of affair with food stands offering French cuisine in the piazza that day. I guess it was the weekend and local came here for the event. It looked very festive.
