Florence, Day 4: Inside Florence Duomo

The architectural style of Florence Duomo is Italian Gothic Renaissance. The building was completed in 1436. The famous dome was engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The facade of the cathedral is composed of white, green and red marbles. The facade and campanile are usually credited to Giotto di Bondone. In fact, the facade was the work of several artists. I find it hard to attribute the facade to a particular artist.

The Gothic interior of Florence Duomo is considered plain compared to other iconic churches.

Check out the Last Judgement under the dome.

The fresco under the dome was done by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari.

The photo above is Dante and the Divine Comedy.

There is a crypt downstairs. You will find the tomb of Brunelleschi. The prestigious burial place shows that Brunelleschi was given the high esteem by the Florentines.

An early Christian pavement can be found in the crypt.

The ruin of the former cathedral of Santa Reparata is also in the crypt.

The doors of the Duomo feature sculptures and ornaments.
