Day 6, Going Home: Tax Refund

By the way, getting tax refund is a pain in the airport especially when you are trying to transfer between flights. Don't assume that the tax refund is in the bag unless you are traveling with a very experienced tour guide. Your tour guide will tell you how to get refund and make sure you have enough time to do so.

In JJ's case, it's virtually impossible to get refund in less than 30 minutes while transferring between flights because it was difficult to find the counter where we could get refund. We kept asking people and got very confused where to go. The good thing is we didn't buy much, so it's not a lot of refund we didn't get back . But lesson learned, If I am going to do a self-guided tour again in Europe, I won't even automatically assume we will get the tax refund.

Another thing is if you want to get a refund, you are supposed to put the items in the carry-on bag and show the custom what you bought. If you are going to put them in the checked luggage, that's another story. I have no idea how. I heard you are supposed to tell the staff at the airline counter about the items in the luggage you are trying to get tax refund, then go somewhere else to apply refund with your luggage and drag your luggage back to the airline counter? Now, how is that possible if you are trying to catch a flight? Unless you go to the airport really early? Even if you know exactly where to get refund in the airport, you have to pray the queue is not going to be long.
