Rome, Day 2: Trajan's Column and Trajan's Market

On our way to colosseum, we passed by Trajan's Column and Trajan's Market. These are the photo ops on your way to Colosseum and Roman Forum.

Trajan's Column was built to celebrate Roman Emperor Trajan's final conquest of Dacia in wars. The spiral base relief tells stories of the wars between the Romans and Dacians. Some suggest the purpose of the column was to spread propaganda. Regardless, Trajan's Column has inspired many commemorative columns. The column was topped with a statue of Trajan. The statue went missing in the Middle Ages. Then the top was crowned with a figure of St. Peter in 1587. It has been there since.

South of Trajan's Column, you find Trajan's Market. It was the equivalent of a shopping center in Ancient Rome. The statue in front of Trajan's Market is emperor Trajan. The market looks so much like something you see in a period movie but this is the real deal. This world's oldest shopping mall used to host around 150 shops selling silk, fish, fruits, and essentials.
